CapCut is the video editor from ByteDance, the maker of TikTok, and it runs on mobile, desktop and in the browser. At its core it is a full video editor, but in recent years many AI tools have been added: automatic captions, background removal without a green screen, audio enhancement, text-to-speech, avatars and even video generation from text. What sets it apart from competitors is that it packs all of this into one simple, free editor optimized for Reels and Shorts.

What is CapCut good for?#

  • Quick editing of Reels and stories: a shop's page turns raw product footage into a ready-to-post video in minutes using a template, music and effects.
  • Background removal: an online teacher removes the background of their room without a green screen and puts slides behind them.
  • Captions for English video: someone making English educational content gets automatic captions and only has to correct them.
  • Resizing for different platforms: converts a horizontal YouTube video to a vertical version while keeping the subject in frame.
  • Audio enhancement and noise removal: cleans up audio recorded on a phone.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • A large share of features is free
  • A simple interface that suits beginners and is still enough for semi-professional work
  • Works on mobile, Windows, Mac and the browser with project syncing
  • Up-to-date templates and effects that follow social network trends

Weaknesses:

  • Many of the attractive AI tools are behind a paid subscription
  • Support for non-Latin scripts in auto captions and text rendering is weak
  • Privacy and content ownership terms have been controversial more than once
  • For long, professional projects, its control doesn't match professional editors

Free version and pricing#

CapCut is freemium. Basic editing, trimming, music, text and many templates are free. Advanced AI tools, some effects and templates, extra cloud storage and higher-quality export are in the paid subscription, and the line between free and paid keeps shifting. Check the official site for current prices.

Language support#

Typing text over video in other scripts is possible, but letters are sometimes shown separated or misordered; add the font yourself and review the export. Automatic captions are not reliable outside widely supported languages, and text-to-speech is limited too. For captions in other languages, it's better to prepare the text elsewhere and import it. Install the mobile version only from the official store.

Getting started in three steps#

  1. Install the right version for your device from the official store or the main site and sign in.
  2. Pick a ready-made template and swap in your own videos to get familiar with the tool.
  3. Then move on to AI tools like background removal and audio enhancement, and save the export.

CapCut alternatives#

  • Descript: video editing from the speech transcript, good for podcasts and tutorial video.
  • OpusClip: automatically cuts long video into short clips.
  • InVideo AI: builds a complete video from a text prompt or idea.
  • Canva: if video is part of your design work and you want graphic templates.
