Canva is an online design tool from the Australian company Canva that, with thousands of ready-made templates, makes it easy for non-designers to create posts, stories, banners, business cards, presentations and short videos. In recent years it has added a set of AI tools: text-to-image generation, background removal, erasing or replacing part of a photo, writing text, and building a complete design from a description. What sets it apart from AI image generators is that AI is just one part of a full design tool, and you turn the output into a finished design right there.

What is Canva good for?#

  • Instagram posts and stories: an online store owner builds a sale post in minutes from a ready template, using their own brand colors and logo.
  • Removing the background from a product photo: one click puts a phone-shot photo on a white or colored background.
  • Building presentations: a student or project manager gets starting slides from a short description and edits them.
  • Blog featured images: a blogger builds one fixed template so all article images share a style.
  • Resizing for multiple networks: converts one design into story, post and website banner sizes.
  • Brand kit: you register your business's logo, colors and fonts once so every team design stays consistent.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Very quick to learn, with a simple interface
  • A huge library of templates, photos, icons and fonts
  • AI tools alongside a full design tool
  • Team collaboration and apps for every platform

Weaknesses:

  • Template-based designs end up looking alike and don't create a distinctive visual identity
  • Its AI image quality is below specialized tools
  • Useful features like background removal and the brand kit are behind a subscription

Free version and pricing#

Canva is freemium. The free plan is enough for most simple jobs and includes a limited quota of AI tools. Individual and team subscriptions unlock premium templates and photos, background removal, automatic resizing, the brand kit and higher AI quotas. There are also free special plans for educational institutions and nonprofits. Check the official site for current prices.

Language support#

Canva displays right-to-left text correctly and includes fonts for several scripts, but its AI tools are weaker in non-English languages: generating images with non-Latin text doesn't work properly, and its AI writing in those languages is weaker than the main chatbots. It's better to write the text elsewhere and use Canva only for design.

Canva alternatives#

  • Adobe Firefly: AI image generation focused on commercially safe use and connected to Adobe tools.
  • Gamma: faster and smarter for building presentations and slides from text.
  • Recraft: vector illustration and consistent-style design for brands.
  • Magnific: the new name for Freepik; a large image library combined with image and video generation tools.
