Google Veo is the family of video generation models from Google DeepMind. From text or an image, Veo makes short clips with cinematic quality, believable physics and synchronized sound: ambient audio, sound effects and even short dialogue are generated together with the picture. Veo has no standalone site like its competitors and is used through Google products: the Flow filmmaking tool, Google Vids for work video, and AI Studio and the API for developers. Google has moved video generation in the Gemini app to a newer generation called Gemini Omni, but Veo is still available in Flow and the API. Its main difference from competitors is high realism and good-quality synchronized sound.

What is Google Veo good for?#

  • Short films and cinematic ideation: A filmmaker in Flow creates several consecutive shots with a consistent character and arranges them on a timeline.
  • Product ads: A brand creates a realistic shot of a product in a real setting, with ambient sound.
  • Training and work videos: In Google Vids, short explainer clips are produced for a company's internal presentation.
  • Turning photos into video: You bring a landscape or product photo to life with camera movement and ambient sound.
  • Video generation inside a developer's app: A programmer uses the API to automate video creation in their own service.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Among the most realistic output on the market
  • Sound synchronized with the picture, including ambient audio and dialogue
  • Good adherence to detailed prompts and camera movement
  • The Flow tool for multi-shot creation and scene control

Weaknesses:

  • Access is spread across several Google products, which makes the path confusing
  • A small free quota and a high cost for full quality
  • Speech and on-screen text in languages other than English are not reliable
  • Google changes models and names quickly, so tutorials go stale fast

Free version and pricing#

Veo can be treated as freemium. Flow has periodic free credit for trying it out, but a serious quota, higher quality and fuller models are in Google's paid AI plans. Use of the API and Google's cloud platform is billed per second of generated video. Videos carry an invisible watermark so that AI generation can be detected. Check the official site for current prices.

Language support#

Veo understands prompts in other languages to a degree, since Google's language models sit behind it, but accuracy is higher with English prompts. Its generated speech in other languages can have wrong pronunciation and tone, and text inside the image often comes out wrong, so add voiceover and subtitles separately.

Alternatives to Google Veo#

  • Kling: close quality, more controls and a more accessible free quota.
  • Runway: a complete set of video editing tools for professional work.
  • Hailuo: natural body motion and a more generous free version.
  • Luma Dream Machine: a simple interface suited to quick ideation.

To understand the limits, read making and editing video with AI: what is possible and what isn't, and before commercial publishing, copyright and commercial use of AI images. Videos this realistic are also a tool for fakes; don't miss AI scams: fake voices, phishing and how to spot them.
