Framer is a no-code site builder that grew from a UI design tool into a real website builder, and it now has a set of AI features. The most important is generating a first draft of a site from a text description: you write what kind of site you want, and Framer builds a multi-page responsive site with suggested copy and layout, which you can then edit freely and publish. It also has a component-building assistant, automatic site translation and image generation. The difference from tools like Lovable is that the end product is a "website", not an app with a database.
What is Framer AI good for?#
- Product or startup landing pages: A small team can publish a product page with animation and professional design in a day.
- Portfolio sites: A designer, photographer or freelance developer builds a good-looking online portfolio without writing code.
- Event and workshop pages: A sign-up and info page for a course or conference goes live quickly.
- Multilingual sites: The automatic translation feature quickly produces another language version of a site (human review is still needed).
- Testing an idea with real design: Before investing in development, you test the look and message of a product with real users.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- Design and animation quality higher than most site builders.
- Very fast from idea to published site.
- Visual editing similar to design tools, familiar to designers.
- Basic SEO, a built-in content management system and forms.
Weaknesses:
- The site is hosted only on Framer's infrastructure and the full code can't be exported.
- Not suited to a serious online store.
- AI results on complex requests are inconsistent and need manual editing.
- Costs rise with more pages, traffic and team members.
Free version and pricing#
Framer has a free plan that includes the AI features; a free site is published on a Framer subdomain with a Framer badge. For a custom domain, badge removal and higher page and traffic limits, you need a paid site plan. Check the official site for current prices.
Right-to-left and other languages#
Framer supports right-to-left layout through a single site-level setting, and you can upload any font you like. The designs the AI generates default to left-to-right, and AI-written text in languages other than English also needs editing, so it is better to write the main copy yourself.
Getting started in three steps#
- Sign up for Framer and start a new project with the build-with-AI option.
- Describe the site type, sections and tone in detail and get the first draft.
- In site settings, set the text direction and fonts if needed, replace the copy, and publish.
