Magnific first became famous for one specific job: creative image upscaling. Unlike ordinary upscalers that only sharpen pixels, Magnific "invents" new, believable detail, such as skin texture, tree leaves or fabric patterns. The Spanish company Freepik, owner of a well-known stock library, bought Magnific and later renamed its entire brand to Magnific. So today Magnific is both the name of that famous upscaler and the name of the platform that offers the former Freepik stock photo and vector library together with tools for image, video, audio and design generation.
What is Magnific good for?#
- Upscaling for print: a designer enlarges an AI-generated image many times for a banner or billboard and gains new detail.
- Upgrading renders and rough drafts: an architect turns a simple render or sketch into a detailed, realistic image.
- Relighting and restyling: change the lighting of a product photo or transfer the style of one image onto another.
- Stock images and vectors: an online store or designer downloads vectors, photos and PSD templates ready for posts and banners.
- Image and video generation with different models: it offers its own model and models from other companies for images and short clips in one place.
- Node-based workflows: advanced users chain generation, editing and upscaling steps in one workspace.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- One of the best creative upscalers, with control over creativity and resemblance
- A huge stock library of images and vectors alongside generative tools
- Access to several image and video models with one account
- An API for use in other products
Weaknesses:
- Creative upscaling may change faces, text or important details
- A complicated credit system, with heavy consumption for large upscales and video
- The rename from Freepik can make old tutorials and links confusing
- Text rendered inside generated images is unreliable in non-Latin scripts
Free tier and pricing#
Magnific is freemium. A free account allows limited image generation with the built-in model and limited stock downloads with attribution, for personal use. Paid plans give monthly credits for generative tools, upscaling and video, and a license to use stock assets without attribution. The older upscaler service remains available for existing users. Check the official site for current pricing.
Language support#
The interface is mainly in English, and the generative tools work better with English prompts. Upscaling needs no writing at all. Text inside generated images in non-Latin scripts usually comes out wrong.
Magnific alternatives#

- Krea: upscaling and detail enhancement alongside a variety of models.
- Adobe Firefly: generative tools with Adobe's stock library and a focus on commercial use.
- Leonardo AI: image generation with a free daily allowance.
