Manus is a general-purpose AI agent that does the work itself instead of just answering in chat. Each request runs in a virtual cloud computer: Manus opens a browser, browses sites, writes and runs code, and at the end delivers a finished output such as a report, spreadsheet, presentation or even a simple website. It was built by a startup of the same name based in Singapore, and its ownership and direction have made the news more than once. Its main difference from chatbots is that you can hand over a task and walk away; it also shows its progress step by step.
What is Manus good for?#
- Market research: "Find ten online cosmetics stores in Turkey and the UAE and put their prices, shipping methods and social accounts in a table."
- Building presentations: from raw text about a product, it builds intro slides for an investor meeting.
- File analysis: give it a sales Excel file and get a report with charts.
- Simple web pages: it builds a landing page to introduce a course or a personal portfolio.
- Product comparison: to buy a laptop for programming, it gathers the specs of several models from different sites and writes a comparison.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- It really carries multi-step work through to the end and delivers a finished file.
- The process is transparent, and you can see what it did at each step.
- It saves a lot of time on research and gathering information from the web.
Weaknesses:
- Long tasks are slow and use many credits.
- It sometimes gets stuck midway or ends with an incomplete result, and you have to restart.
- Like any agent, it may pick up wrong information from the web; check the output.
- Giving a cloud agent access to personal accounts carries a privacy risk.
Free tier and pricing#
Manus works on a credit basis. A free account has a limited allowance, enough for a few trial tasks. Paid plans give more credits, several tasks running at once and more features. Check the official site for current pricing.
Language support#
Manus understands requests in many languages and writes fluent reports, but the sources it finds on the web are mostly English, and for slides and web pages you need to control text direction and fonts yourself in non-Latin scripts.
Getting started in three steps#
- Create an account on the official site or mobile app.
- Give it a small, specific task, such as a comparison table with five rows, to learn how the agent behaves.
- Check the output and open the sources; then move on to larger tasks.
Manus alternatives#
- Genspark: a similar general-purpose agent with more focus on building slides, tables and research pages.
- ChatGPT: has an agent mode and deep research, and is enough for many users.
- Claude: strong at writing precise reports and working with files, and can connect to other tools.
