Claude is the AI assistant from the US company Anthropic, whose founders left OpenAI and which focuses on model safety. Claude chats, reads files and photos, writes and runs code, and works with external tools through MCP. What sets it apart from competitors is writing quality and care on long tasks: its text sounds less machine-made, and it is one of the strongest options for programming and for analyzing long documents.

What is Claude good for?#

  • Writing and rewriting: a blogger gives it an article draft and gets edits to tone and structure and repetition removed, without the text sounding like AI output.
  • Programming: a WordPress or Laravel developer sends a plugin's code and gets a review, a bug fix or a clean rewrite.
  • Analyzing long documents: a lawyer or contract specialist uploads a contract of dozens of pages and asks for the risky clauses with references to the text.
  • Building small tools: with the Artifacts feature it builds a calculator, a form or a simple HTML page that can run right there.
  • Data analysis: give it a CSV of store orders and get tables, charts and a summary.
  • Persistent projects: in Projects you set instructions and reference files once and every conversation uses them.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Natural text and precise adherence to instructions and output format
  • One of the strongest models for programming and multi-step tasks
  • A large context window for long documents and code
  • Connection to external tools and data through MCP

Weaknesses:

  • The message cap on the free plan, and even the basic subscription, fills up quickly
  • It doesn't generate images (only charts and code-based graphics) and its multimodal features are fewer than ChatGPT's and Gemini's
  • It is sometimes overly cautious and refuses harmless requests
  • Availability is limited to supported countries, and sign-up requires phone verification

Free version and pricing#

Claude uses a freemium model. The free plan gives chat, file upload and web search with a limited message cap. Paid subscriptions add several times the usage, stronger models, advanced Projects and access to Claude Code. The API is separate and billed by usage. Check the official site for current prices.

Language support#

Claude's quality in other languages is good; it writes fluent text and is among the best options for editing and rewriting in many languages. For very specialist or local terminology, proofreading is still needed.

Claude alternatives#

  • ChatGPT: more of an all-rounder, with image generation and an advanced voice mode.
  • Gemini: connected to Google services, with a more generous free plan.
  • DeepSeek: free and open source.
  • Perplexity: for questions that need up-to-date, sourced answers.
