What is a dedicated server?#
A dedicated server is a real machine in a data center that you rent, and all of its resources belong to you. There is no neighbor to eat up resources.
Difference from a VPS#
On a VPS, several virtual servers share one piece of hardware. On a dedicated server, the entire hardware is yours. Performance is therefore more predictable, and you can even run your own virtualization on it.
Example#
A large store, a high-traffic news site, or a project that runs several AI models usually needs this kind of power.
Advantages#
- The highest performance and control
- Better security and isolation
- Your choice of hardware, such as NVMe disks, lots of RAM, or a graphics card
- Suitable for heavy workloads and sensitive data
Disadvantages#
- Higher monthly cost
- Requires full management and technical knowledge
- Hardware upgrades can take time
- If hardware fails, replacement takes time unless you have a backup
Where do people rent them?#
From hosting companies and data centers. When choosing, pay attention to network speed, support, the SLA and the data center location.
Common mistake#
Getting a dedicated server "just in case" when a good VPS is enough. Measure what you actually need first.
