What is a VPS?#
A virtual private server, or VPS, uses virtualization software to divide one physical server into several independent parts. Each part has its own operating system, RAM, CPU and disk, and you treat it like the owner of a complete server.
Example#
If shared hosting is an apartment with a shared elevator, a VPS is an apartment with its own meter and its own key. The building is still shared, but your space is better protected.
What does it give you?#
- Full root access and the freedom to install any software
- Guaranteed resources and steadier performance than shared hosting
- Your choice of operating system and web server
- The ability to run several sites, bots, APIs or any program you like
Responsibilities#
A VPS is usually delivered without a control panel or management, which means you have to:
- Keep the system updated
- Secure the firewall and SSH
- Take backups
- Troubleshoot problems
Who is it for?#
High-traffic sites, growing stores, developers who want a custom environment, and people who run language models or specialized tools.
Common mistake#
Buying a VPS without being ready to manage it. An unattended server quickly becomes a target for automated attacks.
