What is a data center?#
Servers cannot run in an ordinary room. Power must never drop, temperature must be controlled, the internet connection must be fast and stable, and nobody should get in without authorization. A data center is the place that provides these conditions.
Main components#
- Power: multiple power feeds, UPS units and generators for outages
- Cooling: because servers produce heat
- Network: connections to several carriers so that if one fails, the others keep working
- Physical security: access cards, cameras and entry control
- Fire suppression: extinguishing systems designed for electronic equipment
Example#
When your hosting is in a reputable data center, a power cut in a local building does not affect your site. But if you keep the server in your office, a simple outage takes the site offline.
Why does it matter to you?#
The location and quality of the data center affect speed, uptime, and even the laws that govern your data. A site hosted in a data center close to its audience usually loads faster for them, while some sites choose a data center elsewhere to reach international services.
Difference from a server#
A server is one machine, and a data center is a place that houses thousands of machines like it.
