WolframAlpha, made by Wolfram Research, doesn't generate text like a chatbot; it computes the answer with its own algorithms and knowledge base. You type a question in English or with math notation and get an exact result, plots and tables. Its key difference from language models is that in math and scientific data it doesn't guess.
What is WolframAlpha good for?#
- Solving math problems: an engineering student enters an integral, derivative, limit or equation and sees the answer and the solution steps.
- Linear algebra and statistics: matrix multiplication, determinants, eigenvalues and statistical distributions.
- Unit conversion and calculation: converting units and working with physics and chemistry formulas.
- Real-world data: country populations, food composition, planetary distances and scientific statistics.
- Checking language-model answers: when ChatGPT gives a number, you can verify it with WolframAlpha.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- High accuracy in math and calculation, since answers are computed, not guessed.
- Broad coverage from mathematics to chemistry, linguistics and geography.
- Good plots and visual output.
- An API for integration into apps and sometimes AI assistants.
Weaknesses:
- It doesn't converse like a chatbot and handles vague questions poorly.
- It doesn't support Persian input.
- Full step-by-step solutions are usually in the Pro plan.
- It's unsuitable for long text-based or creative problems.
Free version and pricing#
Basic use is free. The Pro subscription adds things like more step-by-step solutions and longer inputs. The API and educational or enterprise programs are separate. Check the official site for current prices.
Language support and access from Iran#
Persian input isn't supported; write the question in English or with math notation. I can't say for certain whether it works from Iran, so test whether the site and app open before relying on them.
WolframAlpha alternatives#
- Julius: data analysis and charts through conversation, better than WolframAlpha for data files.
- ChatGPT: conceptual explanation and conversation; understands Persian but double-check its calculations.
- Perplexity: answers with sources for scientific and general questions.
- Khanmigo: an AI tutor that teaches a problem step by step.
