SAM 3D is a set of open-source models from Meta that reconstruct an object or a human body in 3D from a single photo. It has two parts: one for objects and scenes, and another for estimating body shape and pose. Unlike Meshy and Tripo, which are ready web services, SAM 3D is more of a research project and developer tool: the code and weights are free, and you either run it yourself or use the official demo.

What is SAM 3D good for?#

  • Computer vision research: a researcher uses it as a base for 3D reconstruction in their own project.
  • Assets from photos: from a photo of a real object you get a simple 3D model for a game or display.
  • Human body estimation: for animation, sports or virtual clothing try-on, you get body shape and pose from a photo.
  • AR in commerce: previewing an item, such as a sofa, placed in a room; Meta itself uses this in its online marketplace.
  • Workflow integration: a developer wires it into an automated pipeline.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Open source and research transparency.
  • Needs only a single photo as input.
  • Covers two needs: objects and human bodies.
  • Backed by a large research team and official documentation.

Weaknesses:

  • Setup is technical and not simple for casual users.
  • Heavy hardware, especially a graphics card with a lot of memory, is needed.
  • Output may need conversion and cleanup before use in a game engine.
  • The user experience is less polished than web services.

Free version and pricing#

The models themselves are released free and open source, and the main cost is hardware and setup time. Read the exact license terms in the official repository.

Language support and access#

The main input is a photo, so language hardly matters. Downloading code and weights from external sources may be restricted, and we are not sure of the situation from Iran.

Getting started in three steps#

  1. Open the official repository and read the hardware and software requirements.
  2. Install the environment and start with a clear photo of a simple object.
  3. Convert the output to the format you need and clean it up in Blender.

SAM 3D alternatives#

  • Hunyuan3D: Tencent's open 3D models that build from text and images.
  • Meshy: a simple web service for people who don't want to install anything.
  • Tripo AI: fast model generation with clean meshes and a Blender add-on.
