Photomath is a mobile app for solving math problems: you point the camera at a question and see the answer along with the solution steps. It began as an independent startup and later joined Google. Unlike a simple calculator, its main goal is to explain the solution, not just the result. It is like a private tutor that is always with you, if you use it properly.
What is Photomath good for?#
- Understanding how an exercise is solved: when you are stuck, you see the steps one at a time.
- Checking your answer: after solving by hand, compare your result.
- Algebra and equations: solving equations, simplifying expressions and drawing graphs.
- Trigonometry, statistics and calculus: up to high school and early university level.
- Helping parents: quickly review a method so they can help with homework.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- Fast scanning of a question with the camera.
- Step-by-step explanation, not just the answer.
- Wide coverage of school math.
Weaknesses:
- It sometimes misreads poor handwriting and complex word problems.
- Risk of dependence: copying answers does not teach you.
- Supplementary and deeper explanations are behind a subscription.
- No Persian interface or content matched to Iranian textbooks.
Free version and pricing#
Scanning and basic solving are free, and extras such as deeper explanations and textbook solutions come with a subscription. Check the app store or the official site for prices.
Language support and access from Iran#
There is no Persian interface. Because math is symbols and numbers, printed questions with standard notation are usually read correctly, but Persian word problems are not understood and you need to turn them into equations yourself.
We are not sure about access from Iran; the app is installed from official stores and may be restricted.
Photomath alternatives#
- Khanmigo: an AI tutor that helps you understand through questions, not just answers.
- ChatGPT: more flexible for conversational explanations and word problems.
- Wolfram Alpha: exact symbolic computation, suited to advanced math.
- Gemini: Google's assistant, which can also help from a photo of a question.
