Notion AI is the set of AI features inside Notion, the popular tool for notes, documentation and project management. Instead of copying text to a separate chatbot, it writes, summarizes and translates right on your Notion pages and answers from your team's whole workspace and the tools connected to it. Newer generations also have "agents" that carry out multi-step jobs such as creating a page, updating a database or producing a weekly report, and meeting notes have been added too. Its main difference from general chatbots is access to your own internal knowledge.
What is Notion AI good for?#
- Asking your team docs: a new developer asks "what is the process for releasing a new version?" and gets an answer with references to internal pages.
- Meeting and note summaries: meeting notes are turned automatically into a summary and an action list.
- Filling databases: for a store's product list, it fills columns such as a description summary or category automatically.
- Recurring reports: an agent builds a project progress report from task status every week.
- Content drafts: a content creator writes an article outline in the same place where the content calendar lives.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- Works in the same place your team's data lives, with no copy-paste
- Questions over the workspace, with references to the source page
- Agents for multi-step, repetitive jobs
- Access to several strong language models
Weaknesses:
- Without a paid plan it is effectively just a short trial
- Notion's right-to-left support for scripts such as Arabic or Persian is incomplete
- Answer quality depends entirely on how well organized your docs are
- Handing sensitive company data to an outside service carries a risk that you should weigh
Free tier and pricing#
Notion itself has a free plan, but Notion AI gives only a limited number of trial responses there. Full access, including questions over the workspace, agents and meeting notes, comes with paid business plans, and its pricing model has changed several times. Check the official site for current pricing.
Language support#
The AI side understands and writes many languages well because it is built on strong language models. The problem is in Notion's editor itself: right-to-left text sometimes gets the wrong direction, mixing right-to-left and English on one line can get jumbled, and a full right-to-left setting is not available. That is tolerable for short notes and annoying for long documents in such languages.
Getting started in three steps#
- On a Notion page, press the space bar on an empty line or choose the AI option from the menu.
- Start with simple jobs like summarizing or rewriting a page.
- Before asking questions over the whole workspace, tidy and update your team's main docs.
Notion AI alternatives#
- Microsoft Copilot: if your team works in Word, Outlook and Teams.
- Gemini: AI inside Google Docs and Drive for teams that work with Google.
- ChatGPT: a stronger general assistant, but without direct access to your internal docs.
- Motion: if you need time planning and project management more than documentation.
