Le Chat is the AI assistant from the French company Mistral AI, now known as Mistral Vibe. Mistral merged it with its coding agent and turned a plain chat window into a working tool that can plan a task, ask for your approval and then carry it out across different apps. Its main difference from American competitors is that it is European: it falls under EU data-protection rules, and the company releases some of its models as open weights.

What is Mistral Vibe good for?#

  • Quick answers and web search: short, fast answers for everyday questions and news, with sources shown.
  • File and data analysis: a sales analyst uploads an Excel file or a PDF report and gets a summary and charts.
  • Email and documents: in work mode it connects to services such as email and calendar and drafts reports or email replies.
  • Coding: in code mode it connects to a GitHub repository and takes a change as far as a pull request.
  • Simple agents: without any programming, you build an assistant with a set tone and tools for a repetitive team task.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Fast responses
  • Focus on privacy and European regulation
  • Generous free tier, including agent building
  • Open Mistral models you can run on your own server

Weaknesses:

  • Weaker than the leading assistants in several non-English languages
  • Usually behind the best competitors on complex reasoning
  • Smaller user community and fewer learning resources
  • The recent rename can make tutorials harder to find

Free tier and pricing#

Mistral Vibe is freemium. The free tier covers chat, web search, file upload, image generation and agent building under daily limits, which is enough to try it out and for light use. A personal subscription raises the limits and unlocks stronger models, and team and enterprise plans exist as well. The API is billed separately by usage. Check the official site for current pricing.

Language support#

Mistral understands and replies in many languages, but its sentences in some of them can sound like a translation, and specialized or literary text may contain mistakes. If you write mostly in a language other than English, treat it as a second tool rather than the first.

Getting started in three steps#

  1. Open the official site or app and sign up with your email.
  2. Use chat mode for simple questions and try work mode for multi-step tasks.
  3. Read the permissions carefully before connecting your email or GitHub.

Mistral Vibe alternatives#

  • ChatGPT: more of an all-rounder, with a larger ecosystem.
  • Claude: stronger at natural writing and careful coding.
  • Qwen: free and open, strong in multilingual use.
  • DeepSeek: a free, open alternative for reasoning and code.

To understand agents better, read what an AI agent is and how it differs from a chatbot, and before connecting work accounts, review what you should never give an AI: keys, passwords and customer data. For more on Mistral's open models, see open-source AI models: what they are and when they help.
