Cline is an open-source coding agent used mostly as a VS Code extension, with command-line and desktop versions as well. It handles multi-step tasks: it reads your project, creates and edits files, runs terminal commands and checks the result, moving forward step by step with your approval. Unlike subscription tools, you choose the model yourself and connect it with your own key.
What is Cline good for?#
- Building a new feature: you describe a sign-up form and it creates the needed files and wires them into the project.
- Fixing errors: you paste a terminal error, it finds the cause in the code and proposes a fix.
- Understanding an unfamiliar project: a programmer who inherited an old codebase asks about its structure.
- Working with a local or custom model: a team that doesn't want to send code to a particular service connects its own model.
- Automating repetitive work: such as writing tests or updating several similar files.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- Open source, not tied to any one model or company.
- Every action needs your approval, so you stay in control.
- Direct, transparent cost: you pay only for model usage.
- Works with local models too.
Weaknesses:
- Token usage in agent work can be high and the bill can surprise you.
- Initial setup (key and model) isn't easy for a beginner.
- Quality depends on the model you choose.
- It has no line-by-line autocomplete; it is built for agent-style work.
Free version and pricing#
Cline itself is free and open source. The main cost is model usage, either through a provider's key or with a local model where you only pay for hardware. The official site has companion services and payment options; check current prices there.
Language support and access from Iran#
Cline does the coding with the model you pick, so non-English quality depends on that model; Persian explanations usually work but English instructions give more precise results. Installing the extension is easy, but since commercial models are usually blocked from Iran, check access separately for whichever model service you choose.
Cline alternatives#
- Aider: an open-source command-line agent that commits changes straight into git.
- Cursor: a full editor with a subscription and a more integrated experience.
- GitHub Copilot: code completion and chat in common editors.
- Claude Code: Anthropic's command-line agent for working across a whole project.
