Replit is a complete coding environment in the browser that is now best known for its AI agent. You describe the app you want, and the agent plans, writes code, builds a database, runs and tests the app and finally publishes it with one click. All of this happens without installing anything on your computer. What sets it apart from tools like Lovable is that it is a real development environment with multiple programming languages, a terminal and built-in hosting, not just an app builder.

What is Replit good for?#

  • Prototyping a startup idea: in one evening, build a clickable version of a booking system or small store and show it to real users.
  • Internal tools for a business: for example, a simple dashboard for logging orders or sales reports that only your own team uses.
  • Learning to code: a student runs Python or JavaScript right there with no setup and asks the agent for explanations.
  • Scripts and bots: build a Telegram bot or an automation script that runs on Replit's servers.
  • Simple mobile apps: the agent can also build a mobile app that you test on your phone.

Strengths and weaknesses#

Strengths:

  • Everything in one place: editor, agent, database, hosting and publishing.
  • No development environment to install or configure.
  • Support for a wide range of languages and frameworks.
  • A mobile app for continuing work on your phone.

Weaknesses:

  • Agent cost is usage-based and climbs fast on larger projects.
  • The agent sometimes gets stuck in an error-fixing loop and burns a lot of credit.
  • Apps depend on Replit's infrastructure; moving to your own server takes extra work.

Free plan and pricing#

Replit has a free plan that gives limited daily credits for the agent, basic features and temporary publishing of one app; advanced agent modes and connections to external services are not enabled in it. Paid plans give monthly credits, permanent publishing, a custom domain and team features, and extra usage is billed separately. Check the official site for current prices.

Language and layout support#

Replit's agent understands requests in many languages and can build apps with right-to-left layouts; just say explicitly that the page direction should be right-to-left and which font to use. Replit's own interface is in English.

Replit alternatives#

  • Lovable: a simpler experience and nicer interfaces for web apps.
  • Bolt.new: builds complete web apps in the browser with code download.
  • v0: strong at building React interfaces and publishing on Vercel.
  • Cursor: if you are a developer and want full control working on your own computer.
