Character.AI is a US service for chatting with AI-made "characters": from fictional and historical figures to a language teacher, a practice coach or a character you create yourself. What sets it apart from ChatGPT and similar assistants is that its goal isn't accurate answers or useful work; it is built for entertainment, role-play and interactive stories. That is why its replies feel warm and emotional, but it is not a reliable source of information.
What is Character.AI good for?#
- Language conversation practice: a language learner speaks English with a character playing a waiter or a job interviewer; voice calls are available too.
- Interactive fiction writing: a writer builds a conversational version of their story's character to test its tone and reactions.
- Entertainment and role-play: text adventures with imaginary characters, or a chat with a simulated version of a historical figure.

Language support#
You can write in other languages and get replies, but quality is low: sentences read like translations, are sometimes irrelevant and are full of repetition. Almost all the popular characters are built for English, so it is more useful for English practice than for conversation in other languages.
Sign-up is possible with an email or Google account, and you may be asked for identity verification or a face photo to confirm your age. Don't share real personal information such as an address, a phone number or private problems with characters.
A few tips for healthy use#
- Treat it as entertainment, not a friend, a counselor or a source of information.
- If your child uses it, talk with them about the age limit and the risk of dependence.
- Limit usage time and don't give out personal information.
