What is a Story?#
A Story is a content format found on Instagram, Facebook and several other platforms. It is shown full-screen and vertical, and after a set time (usually 24 hours) it becomes unavailable, unless you keep it in a highlight or archive.
How is it different from a post?#
A post is meant to stay; a Story is for the moment. That is why its tone is friendlier and more casual, and it suits behind-the-scenes looks, stock updates, short-term discounts and conversations with the audience.
Interactive features#
- Polls and Q&A
- Countdown stickers
- Links and mentions
- Direct replies to a Story that go into your inbox
Example#
A bakery posts a "fresh bread is ready" Story every morning and, in the afternoon, a poll: "Which bread should we bake tomorrow?" The audience feels like part of the group.
Recommendations#
- Keep Stories short and in order; not too many in a row.
- Write text large and readable, since most people watch with the sound off.
- Save important Stories to a highlight so they are always available.
A common mistake#
Posting ten promotional Stories in a row. The audience gets tired and skips them.
