Udio is an AI music generation service built by a group of former Google DeepMind researchers. You give it a description like "upbeat pop song with acoustic guitar about a summer trip" or your own lyrics, and Udio delivers a full song with vocals, instruments and arrangement. Audio quality and instrument detail are its recognized strengths. Its important difference from rivals in recent years is its legal path: Udio has reached agreements with major music publishers and is becoming a platform with official licensing, which has affected downloads and use of the output.
What is Udio good for?#
- Ideas for songwriters: a songwriter tries several styles and melodies for a set of lyrics and then makes the final version themselves.
- Personal and fun songs: make a song with lyrics of your choice for a birthday or family occasion.
- Extending and remixing: make a track longer or add a new section such as a verse or bridge.
- Learning styles: a music student hears how a melody changes across different styles.
- Testing sound for a creative project: a game or animation maker tries the overall sound world of the project.
Strengths and weaknesses#
Strengths:
- High audio quality and instrument detail
- A variety of styles and good control over song structure
- The ability to extend and edit sections of a song
- A mobile app and a discovery feed of other people's songs
Weaknesses:
- Download and commercial-use status has been uncertain during the transition to a licensed platform
- Slightly harder to learn than its main rival
- Weak for vocals in less common languages and for regional music
- The copyright status of generated songs is still unclear in many countries
Free plan and pricing#
Udio is freemium. The free plan gives limited daily credits for making a few songs. Paid plans unlock more credits, simultaneous generation, uploading your own audio and advanced editing. Important: because of legal agreements, file downloads and commercial-use rights may differ from before; read the current terms on the official site before buying. See current prices there too.
Lyrics in other languages#
Udio can sing lyrics in other languages, but pronunciation, word stress and how the lyrics sit on the melody often have flaws, and it will not render styles such as traditional regional music authentically. Its interface is in English, and it is better to describe the style in English.
Getting started in three steps#
- Sign up with a Google account or email.
- Describe the style, mood and instruments in English, and write the lyrics separately or use auto-generation.
- Pick the best of several generated versions and extend it.
Udio alternatives#
- Suno: the main rival, simpler to start with and with a larger user community.
- ElevenLabs: if you need voiceover, speech or sound effects more than full songs.
Before releasing any AI-made work commercially, read copyright and commercial use of AI-generated images; the same principles apply to music. For a general understanding of the technology, see what is generative AI and how does it differ from classical AI.
