Static vs dynamic QR codes: which one is permanent?#
The QR codes this tool creates are static: your link or text is written directly into the black-and-white pattern. No server is needed to read them, so they never expire and keep working even if this website disappears one day.
Services that sell dynamic QR codes put a short link to their own server inside the code and then redirect people to your destination. The upside is that you can change the destination after printing and see scan statistics. The downside is that every printed code stops working when the subscription ends or the service shuts down. If you want to change the destination later, put a link to a page on your own website in the code and update that page whenever you need.
QR codes for photos, videos and PDFs#
A QR code holds at most about 3,000 bytes, so a photo or video cannot fit inside it. The right way: upload the file somewhere (your site, Google Drive, YouTube or a Telegram channel), copy its public share link and paste it into the Link section of this tool. Make sure the link opens for everyone, not just for your account.
Wi-Fi QR codes for cafés and guests#
In the Wi-Fi section, enter the network name, password and security type (usually WPA/WPA2). Guests scan the code with their phone camera and join without typing the password; Android 10 and later and iPhone do this natively. Put the code by the counter or on tables. If you change the Wi-Fi password, the old code stops working and you need a new one.
Printing tips: size, contrast and logos#
- Do not print smaller than 2 × 2 cm. The more content, the denser the code and the bigger it needs to be; the tool shows a suggested minimum size.
- Rule of thumb: scanning distance is about ten times the code width. A poster read from two meters needs a code about 20 cm wide.
- Dark code on a light background works best. Some phones cannot read low-contrast colors or light codes on dark backgrounds.
- Keep the white quiet zone around the code; four modules is the standard.
- When you add a logo, error correction switches to H (30%) to make up for the covered area, and the logo never exceeds 20% of the code area.
- For professional print and banners, download the SVG; it stays sharp at any size.
If your browser supports BarcodeDetector (for example Chrome on Android and Mac), the tool reads the code right away and shows Readable. Still, test it with two different phones before printing a large batch.
Safety: do not scan unknown QR codes#
Scammers sometimes stick fake QR codes on menus, parking meters or posters to send you to a fake payment or login page. Read the address your phone shows before opening it, and never type a password or card details on a page opened from an unknown QR code. This tool builds everything on your own device and sends nothing, including Wi-Fi passwords, to any server.
