When someone searches for "coffee shop near me" or "appliance repair near me", before opening your site they see a small card in the results: name, rating, opening hours, photos and a call or directions button. This card comes from your Google business profile. If it is unclaimed, incomplete or outdated, the customer will probably go to a competitor.
The good news is that creating and maintaining a profile is free and takes more care than technical skill. This article covers the steps in order. You can also see the general concept of local SEO in what is local SEO.
Menus and button labels at Google change from time to time. This guide gives the general path; if the headings differ a little, find the same section in the current interface.
Before you start: prepare your details#
The information you enter must be the same everywhere: your site, business card, social media and the shop door.
- The official and everyday name of the business, exactly as customers know it.
- The full, exact address.
- An active phone number.
- Opening hours, including holidays.
- The main category of your activity.
- A few real photos of the outside, inside, products and team.
Steps to create and verify#
- Create a Google account for the business, or use an account that the business owner can always access. Do not use an employee's personal account to own the profile; if they leave, the access goes with them.
- Search for your business name on Google. If a profile already exists, claim it instead of creating a duplicate.
- If there is no profile, find the option to add a business in the profile management area and enter the details.
- Specify the type of presence: a shop with an address, or a business that travels to the customer's location. If you do not want to show your address, read the option about the service area.
- Complete the verification step. Verification methods vary by business and time; Google itself shows the available options.
- After verification, complete the details.
Choose the category and description well#
The primary category is the most important choice. Choose the most precise category that describes your work, for example "refrigerator repair service" rather than "services". Secondary categories help for real services. Write the business description honestly and briefly: what you do, for whom and what sets you apart. The most common mistake is stuffing the business name with search words ("best cheap auto repair downtown"); this violates the rules and can cause trouble.
Photos, services and products#
Real photos build trust. A picture of the shop's exterior helps customers find it. Photos of the inside, products and team give a clear impression. Avoid stock photos. Write your services and products in the relevant sections with a clear description, and fill in sections such as Q&A if they are available.
Opening hours and staying current#
The worst experience for a customer is arriving at the address and finding the shop closed. Keep regular hours and special holiday hours up to date. Whenever the number, address or services change, correct the profile the same day. It takes ten minutes and prevents dissatisfaction.
Take reviews seriously#
Customer reviews affect the buyer's decision and are part of your profile's image. A few principles:
- Reply to all reviews, positive or negative, in a polite and specific tone.
- For a negative review, write a short apology, a real explanation and an offer to fix the problem, and do not argue.
- Ask satisfied customers to leave a review, but never buy reviews and do not give misleading rewards for positive ones.
- Pursue fake or abusive reviews by reporting them.
Align your site and profile#
A profile works without a site, but a simple site that shows the same name, address and phone number exactly strengthens the profile's credibility. Link your profile to your site. If you want to know how many people came from the profile to your site, UTM parameters on the profile's website link will help.
Mistakes that put your profile at risk#
There are a few common errors worth knowing from the start. Creating several profiles for one location, using a rented or virtual address instead of the real place of work, and changing the name to a promotional phrase all conflict with Google's rules and may get the profile suspended. Sometimes unwanted edits by others are applied to your profile information, so look in periodically and correct the details. If the hours or address have changed and the profile has not been updated, you will see unhappy customers in the reviews.
A simple weekly routine#
You do not need to look at the profile every day. Ten minutes a week is enough: reply to new reviews, add one or two new photos, check special hours or closures and look at customer questions. Once a month, also review the stats for views, calls and direction requests and see what has changed. This simple habit keeps the profile alive and trustworthy and often pays off more than any complicated trick.
Answer common customer questions in the profile#
Customers often have a few repeated questions: Is there parking? Is a reservation needed? Do you accept card payments? Are you open on holidays? Write the answers to these questions in the description, the Q&A section or the profile attributes (wherever Google allows). This both reduces repeat calls and brings the customer to the shop with a clearer picture. Put the same questions on your site too so the information stays consistent.
Summary#
- The profile is free and is a local business's first encounter with a customer.
- Details must be accurate and consistent everywhere: name, address, phone, hours.
- Choose the main category precisely and do not stuff the name with promotional words.
- Add real photos and always keep the information up to date.
- Reply to reviews politely and never buy fake reviews.
