What does Wi-Fi mean?#
Wi-Fi is a wireless way of connecting to a local network. The router communicates by radio waves with your phone, laptop and TV. Wi-Fi itself is not the internet; it is only the way you reach a router that is connected to the internet. If the modem is down, Wi-Fi can still connect but you have no internet.
Two important bands#
- 2.4 GHz: longer range and better penetration through walls, but slower and more crowded (many devices use it).
- 5 GHz: faster and with less interference, but with a shorter range.
Newer Wi-Fi generations support both bands with better performance.
Why does Wi-Fi sometimes get weak?#
Concrete walls, distance, interference from neighbors' Wi-Fi, microwaves and several heavy devices at once can all weaken the signal. If you have something sensitive to do, such as gaming or a video call, a network cable is still more stable.
Security#
Set a strong password and use WPA2 or newer encryption. A network without a password means anyone can connect and see your traffic. On public Wi-Fi, it is also better to use a secure connection (HTTPS or a VPN).
Where you encounter it#
Homes, cafes, airports, universities and hotels; anywhere a wireless network is offered.
