Understanding the KV Cache#
During autoregressive text generation, re-evaluating preceding context for each newly sampled token causes massive redundant compute. The Key-Value (KV) Cache stores prior attention vectors in GPU RAM. Architectures like PagedAttention (vLLM) allocate this memory in non-contiguous pages, eliminating waste.
Everyday Analogy#
A chess player's match notation sheet: jotting down preceding moves on paper so the player doesn't have to mentally reconstruct the entire match opening prior to every turn.
Production Infrastructure Impact#
- Up to 4x throughput improvement on multi-tenant LLM serving clusters
- Completely eliminates GPU memory fragmentation from variable sequence lengths
- Enables 8-bit and 4-bit KV cache quantization for ultra-dense serving
