A beta version is a stage between the first build of software and its official release. The main features are ready, but it may still have bugs, slowness or unexpected behaviour. The maker gives it to a limited group or to the public so that real problems can be found before the final release.

Alpha versus beta#

  • Alpha: very early, usually only inside the team or for a particular group.
  • Beta: closer to the final product and for wider testing.
  • Stable version: what is ready for the public and for everyday use.

An example#

Browsers and mobile operating systems often have a beta channel. If you install one on your main phone, the battery may drain quickly, your banking app may not work or some features may be unstable.

Should I install a beta?#

  • If you are curious and have a spare device, yes.
  • If the device or software is for daily or sensitive work, it is better to wait for the stable version.
  • Back up important data before installing.

A note#

Sometimes a beta can be found only in unofficial releases on unknown sites. These files may have been tampered with; get a beta only from the maker's official channel.
