App permissions are the approvals a program asks of you to reach sensitive parts of your phone: for example the camera, microphone, contacts, SMS, storage, calendar or location.
An example#
A ride-hailing app needs your location to find your pickup point; that is reasonable. But a calculator app that wants your contacts and microphone is suspicious.
How does it work?#
In recent versions of the operating system, most permissions are asked for at the time of use, and you can choose options such as "only while using the app" or "ask every time". You can also remove a permission at any time from the phone's settings.
Simple rules for users#
- Grant only permissions that fit what the app does.
- Where possible, set location to "only while using the app".
- Periodically review the permissions of apps you rarely use.
- Remove apps that ask for SMS or contacts access for no reason.
Why does it matter?#
Most abuse happens through these accesses. Spyware and fake apps collect your information by obtaining unnecessary permissions. Paying attention to permissions is the simplest defense of your privacy.
