What is 5G?#
5G is the fifth generation of mobile communications, after 3G and 4G (LTE). It aims at three things: higher speed, much lower latency, and the simultaneous connection of a very large number of devices in one area.
Three key features#
- Speed: several times faster than the previous generation under good conditions.
- Low latency: very fast response, important for cloud gaming, remote surgery and self-driving cars.
- Capacity: support for millions of sensors and Internet of Things devices.
Frequency bands#
5G works on several bands. The low band has long range and moderate speed. The mid band offers a good balance. The high band (millimeter wave) has extremely high speed but short range, and even walls can block it. Your experience depends on the band your carrier has deployed.
What do you need?#
A 5G-capable phone, a suitable SIM and plan, and above all, your carrier's network coverage at your location. If any of these is missing, the phone runs on LTE.
Common mistake#
Most people think that wherever there is 5G the internet must be very fast. In reality, real quality depends on cell congestion, the band, the distance to the tower and the capacity of the network's backhaul. Also, concerns that 5G poses a special health risk have not been confirmed by reliable scientific evidence.
Where you encounter it#
The 5G icon next to your phone's signal bars, in carriers' marketing, and in new models of SIM-based modems.
